The general public has adopted a very wrong idea that wars of counter insurgency are unwinnable, and this is not the case. The reality is that they can only be won with a large commitment of troops, safe zones, and systematic dismantling of the insurgency. It doesnt work with Rumsfeld Doctrine type armies with limited manpower and heavy air superiority. This is a doctine developed more for peer to peer combat, but more importantly for political purposes to avoid mass mobilization. When people dispute that the US really didnt lose Vietnam they're mostly saying that the US could have won if they had the political will to do so.
